No visit to Broken Hill is complete without viewing our region's spectacular scenery through the eyes of talented artists. Broken Hill is renowned for its vibrant art community, with artists depicting the great outback with vivid sunsets, landscapes and vast open spaces. Home of the legendary Brushmen of the Bush, the Silver City hosts many galleries where you can view the region's spectacular scenery as interpreted by talented artists.
Our half day 'Taste of the Artback' tour will take you to many galleries including Pro Hart, Jack Absalom, and the Silver City Mint and Art Centre.
At Silver City Mint and Art Centre, you'll be blown away by the world's largest acrylic painting by a single artist... the Big Picture. Opened to the public in 2001, Ando's Big Picture quickly became Broken Hill's number one tourist attraction!
Another highlight is a visit to Howard Steer (pictured) who has lived all his life in Broken Hill. The subjects of his paintings are the people and animals of the outback, and explore the early miners' struggle to get reasonable working conditions, and Howard’s humorous (and sometimes satiric) views of our Australian icons. The result is a host of powerful stories-in-art.
